Brachial loop primitively and persistently short, of terebratulid, terebratulinid or chlidonophorid type in most forms but neotenously centronelliform or with complex derivative thereof in some Palaeozoic forms, loop developed directly from cardinalia; median septum normally lacking; internal spicules usually developed in mantle, body wall, lophophore, and filaments of recent species.
